What is abdominoplasty?

A “tummy tuck”, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen. It involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen, whilst also tightening the underlying muscles.

Why undergo abdominoplasty?

There are several reasons why one’s abdomen may become lax and have a “sagging” appearance. The most common are following:
  • significant weight loss;
  • pregnancy
  • surgery which results in weakness of abdominal muscles
Often, non surgical measures are unable to correct the excess skin and fat which result from the aforementioned conditions. An abdominoplasty can address these issues and improve self confidence.

What does it involve?

During your initial consultation with Ms Anavekar, you will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns and goals related to undergoing an abdominoplasty. She will ask you questions and perform a clinical examination to ensure you are fit for surgery and to formulate a plan for you.
Ms Anavekar will discuss the operation with you, as well as the potential risks involved. The surgery will be performed at an accredited private hospital under a general anaesthetic provided by a qualified anaesthetist. The surgery takes approximately 3 hours. You will be required to stay in hospital for 1-2 nights.

What happens after surgery?

Ms Anavekar will review you whilst you are in hospital. It is normal to feel some discomfort for the first few days following surgery. You will be required to wear a tight fitting abdominal garment for 6 weeks. It is advised that you take 2-3 weeks off from work, and to avoid any heavy lifting for 6 weeks.
Following your discharge from hospital, you will see Ms Anavekar 1 week, 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months after surgery. Additional appointments will be made as required.
